She saw the white-neon shining cross on the church. This was the spot, she knew. To her right was the rubbly-looking brick wall of a building that had a faded white mural on it saying: Save the Salvation Army. To the side of the church were two brownstone houses with overgrown, dense trees and shrubs encroaching on an alleyway that looked as if it led all the way along the side of the church. She had coordinates but not an exact address. Having researched the area, the church had seemed like an obvious place to start. She went up the stairs and pulled on the front door and it rattled but didn't open.

She had to look around herself. The streets were still quiet. There was the occasional sound of a car driving on one of the side streets, but otherwise, she was surprised. She'd expected block parties and pimps and prostitutes to be hanging around—but it seemed like a nice neighborhood. She went back down the church stairs and looked down the dark, overgrown alley. She estimated that the person she’d been interacting with—BlackHand1914, the man who wanted to kill, butcher, and eat her—was now within fifty feet. One of the things that swayed it for her was the username. It couldn’t have been chosen randomly. It was a clear insight into the person behind the handle. She knew that the Black Hand was the organization that assassinated Archduke Ferdinand in Austria and was used by the Germans as an excuse to incite war with Russia. That wasn’t the compelling thing for her, though. If she took the reference to the next layer down, Franz Ferdinand was also the name of a rock band. One of their most popular songs was called Evil Eye. No matter how much she tried, she couldn’t see past the coincidence: the username and the song. It had to be him. Now she just had to find him.

Fox started walking around one side of the church, looking for any basements or boarded-up areas she could enter. There was nothing around the left-hand side. Her only option, she decided, was to go down the dark alley and see what she could find.
